Find the others.
Around the world on October 22, 2024, there will be a free local meetup for folks interested in connecting around and discussing the work they do and the strategy they bring to their project. A hundred or more cities, in every time zone, coming together to meet and find mutual support. It’s based on my new book, but it’s all about you and your work.
Here’s how it works:
FIND A LOCAL MEETUP
There’s a special Google Map showing the locations that are already being offered. Find one near you, click the link and you can sign up to be part of that meetup. Hit the ‘JOIN’ button. It’s free.
Once you join, you’ll get periodic updates before the event by email. Please check your spam folders… There’s a second box on the page to enter your email as well, from a different email delivery service… just in case.
Once you find your city, please be sure to register with your name and photo too. Just click the yellow circle on the top right corner of your screen and you can update all your information.

GET THE PROMPTS
Everyone at the meetup will get access to a pre-recorded video from me the day before the event. You can download it to your phone or laptop and be ready for the meeting. You can bring your own copy of This is Strategy for the session or purchase one if like if you’re meeting at one of the bookstores on the map. (No book is required, of course).
The video will include key concepts and riffs from my new book, but it’s focused on three or four prompts that will be followed by real-life breakout sessions for you and a few of your peers. You’ll meet new people and learn something along the way.
When we worked with the company that built the software, we tried to pick cities that reflected the readership of the blog, and not pick too many or too few. If you want to add a city, here’s a simple form for your request. And if there are a bunch of nearby meetings and none is too crowded, captains can combine them into one. PS you only need three people to make a meeting work.
What you see is a guideline. You pick the time and place and make it work.
VOLUNTEER TO BE A CAPTAIN/ADMIN
Every local meet-up will have a captain (the software calls it an ‘admin’ which is a lot less romantic). This person can coordinate the location (and change it if the group concurs) as well as find the most convenient time. If you’d like to offer to be a captain, please join a local group and then click the button to volunteer to be an admin.
Once you become an admin, you’ll want to create an event and then start inviting folks to it.
(There’s a short addendum at the end of this post about how to set up the event once you’re an admin).
INVITE SOME COLLEAGUES
If you’re up for it, please invite a few friends and colleagues. If this works well, we’ll have all the systems in place and we can do it again.
This page will be updated from time to time, so check back to see what’s new.
Click here to see the map. (click the three dots to hide the legend on the left once it loads).
If you’re not seeing your location and would like to suggest it, here’s a simple form you can fill out.
We’d love for you to volunteer to be a captain of your local meetup. Just join the group then hit the button on the right that says ‘admin’ to volunteer. Captains help coordinate the event and can also chime in and change the venue.
And click here to see all the meetings that are in place.
Thanks for making a ruckus.
SUMMARY
How to be an Admin
When you get to the city you’d like to organize, click the button to be an admin.

Now, you have the ability to change the details (the venue, the time) of the event. You can do that by visiting MY GROUPS and then hitting MANAGE.

You can also hit + Event which is right next to the manage button. This will allow you to create a specific event that people can RSVP to and discuss.

And you can send an email automatically to every person who is part of your local event.

UPDATE: Here are the prompts for Tuesday. No need to watch in advance. Better to do it live than plan ahead.
